THE MEASURE OF THE SELF
by editorial staff
In our perspective, the museum is not only a place of preservation and transmission, but also a laboratory of lifelong learning, a space for reflection on shared and individual destinies, a tool of cultural and social growth.
This section is dedicated to illustrating the evolution of the editorial project of the site, guiding our Visitors‑Readers with a framework that helps them grasp implications and connections among the various titles. It is not merely a technical introduction, but a true form of assistance and thematic didactics: a way to make transparent the path we are undertaking and to foster continuous dialogue with those who follow us.
As you know, with each new season, lasting at most three years, the archives are reset and the site begins again with renewed graphics, new topics, initiatives, and perspectives. This process of renewal is not a simple aesthetic change, but a genuine act of regeneration: a way to give new energy to the project, to welcome different guests, to reconnect with familiar collaborators, and to open up to positions and updates that enrich our vision. The seventh season is no exception: everything starts anew, except for some significant content that serves as a bridge with the season just concluded, so as not to lose continuity and to maintain a thread of memory.
The logic of opening this new phase pays particular attention to the operational feedback derived from the theme of the year: reflecting on what is meant by “museum intelligence,” beyond the technological applications of artificial intelligence often flaunted as a universal solution. We instead wish to propose a deeper reflection, concerning the museum’s ability to think itself, almost in an Aristotelian sense, as an entity that measures and recognizes itself. The title chosen for the editorial, The Measure of the Self, encapsulates two fundamental aspects: on the one hand, the identification and measurement of the components of the museum system; on the other, the ability to gather resources (economic, financial, relational, and content-based) to sustain its functioning and ensure its vitality.
From here arise the first two proposals presented on the homepage: Museum Systematics and Network Museum Economics. The first, initiated in 2019 and constantly updated, defines and catalogs museum functions in an evolutionary key, offering a systematic framework that allows us to read the museum not as a sum of isolated activities, but as a complex organism. The second, in a spin‑off perspective, proposes a parallel systematics focused on the energy‑economic aspects and resources of the museum system, with the aim of understanding how the museum manages and balances its energies and assets.
To clarify this editorial pairing, we can resort to some analogies. As in traditional accounting, the income statement represented the dynamics of exchanges, while the balance sheet consolidated the static result: in the same way, the museum shows both its operational dimension and its patrimonial one. Similarly, a person may hold titles and authorizations to practice a profession, but this does not automatically guarantee the full ability to perform it at their best: the museum, therefore, is not defined only by its structure, but by the quality of its function. Finally, particle physics offers us the wave‑particle dualism, today interpreted as a wave function that contains all the information of the system: depending on observation, different properties emerge, and thus the museum reveals its intelligence both in daily operations and in the measure with which it affirms mission and vision.

These analogies are not mere rhetorical ornaments: they serve to show how the museum, precisely as a complex system, cannot be reduced to a single aspect. It is at once dynamic and static, operational and patrimonial, formal and substantial. It is an organism that lives through daily activities but at the same time must consolidate its identity and its mission.
Here then is a first response to the theme of the year: museum intelligence as the system’s ability to conceive itself in its operations and mission, to measure and recognize itself, to think itself and to affirm its vision. The publications will continue to deepen these perspectives, in the wake of research that investigates the intellectual dimension of the museum and that, in the future, could become an active mode of interpreting the existential awareness of both the individual and the community. In this perspective, the museum is not only a place of preservation and transmission, but also a laboratory of lifelong learning, a space for reflection on shared and individual destinies, a tool of cultural and social growth.
